IDJ Magazine - July 2005 Anonms Emcee - Binary The man they also call DJ Journee is back with another indeperndent banger, and 'Binary' combines tough drums, an evil bassline and some sick scrathcing. It's not one for the ladies, basically. 'Wack Duck' on the flipsode of this site also uses the same kind of old school computer game noises, but successfully manages to incorporate the sound of a quaking duck in the chorus, which alone os pretty impresive. ***(DJ YODA) TTR Magazine - March 2004 Various - Trouble 1 A four track techno compilation EP of high quality. Gabriel Palomo, DJ Flip, DJ Journey and Inbum Cho all display a funk from home that is and could only be Chicago. Minimal but funky as fuck techno that I could easily see Jeff Mills playing. Journees track particularly pushes the boundaries a bit with its stuttered jazz feel as does Inbums trippy mechanical work out.(Tom Baker) TTR Magazine - March 2004 Various - Trouble 2 Another compilation of various artists, great value for money this lot.> Id not heard of DJ Journee before getting these releases but I must say Ive now sat up and taken notice. His/Her track on this release is also challenging and engaging, with a large dollop of chi town funk. Dj Jes goes on an jackin acid journey which really kicks off towards the end, and Tim Xaviers Jack One is rolling wonky jackin techno for those little breathers in between the chaos.(Tom Baker) Ukhh.com - January 2004 Dj Journee aka Anonms Emcee - The Globe 12" This debut release from Chicago based Mindshift presents an introductory record to display the solo production and emcee skills of DJ Journee. The opening track "Uh-Oh" is dominated by a hypnotic analogue b-line that works itself into crazy patterns through pitch adjustments - you'll recognise the influence of older pre-'94 jungle tracks. The rapper gently flows across the surface of the beat but the digital production really holds your attention with its video game sampling electronic funk. The second and third tracks get progressively expansive and jazzy to allow the emcee to spit his original and skilful rhymes in a slightly Rakim-esque manner. Overall - a very impressive debut platter from a new head displaying real skills within all elements this truly solo venture.(Smiffy) BPM Magazine - December 2003 Various Artists - Trouble2 (Mindshift) Varied ranges of hues are felt here as Chicago residents Journee, Jes, and Tim Xavier install innovative concepts upun this young imprint. From the crackling hats in Journee's swung-up dirty mix, to the quirky IDM influx of Xavier's production, the highlight remains on Jes's deeply melodic cut featuring a portamento lead and massive synth pads. (Praxis) UndergroundHipHop.com - November 2003 Anonms Emcee - The Globe I Honestly havn't heard of this guy , but he puts forth a strong single - a good mixshow joint. Journee's beat uses a classic break to keep your head nodding while Anonm's vocal has an old-school , Rakim-sounding tone quality. Listen to the track and hear for yourself. (SHADE) Anonms Emcee - The Globe "KEEPS YOU LISTENING" I've never heard of Anonms Emcee or Dj Journee before, but I will remember the name after this. The beat is expertly put together and it really keeps you listening (It's almost hypnotic). Anonms is also interesting on the mic, so from now on I'm going to look out for his shit. **** 4/5 Rating Groove Distribution - August 2003 DJ JOURNEE - THE GLOBE 12" MS001A Dome-Rocking hip hop debut from Chicago's Mindshift Records, this 12" features the Rakim-esque verses of Dj Journee over his own chunky , video game sampling beats. The B side cut is a bit smoother, but still funky. Includes the ill instrumentals for both, plus a bonus cut. Dope! BPM Magazine - July 2003 VARIOUS ARTISTS - TROUBLE1 (MINDSHIFT) THE CHICAGO UNDERGROUND AUTHORITY EMITS A TASTE OF WHAT NIGHTLIFE OFFERS UPON THIS FOUR TRACK EP. FROM GLITCHY MINIMAL GROOVES TO SYNCOPATED LOW-BPM FUNK, THIS GENERAL DISCUSSION TOPIC HERE IS VERSATILITY. WITH MIXES FROM GABRIEL PALOMO, DJ FLIP, DJ JOURNEE, AND INBUM CHO, THIS DIVERSE SELECTION INVITES CHANGE. (PRAXIS) IDJ Magazine - March 2003 Anonms Emcee - The Globe IF YOU KNOW YOUR US AREA CODES THEN IT WILL MEAN SOMETHING TO YOU THAT THIS INDIE RAP 12" COMES STRAIGHT OUTTA THE 773. DJ JOURNEE PRODUCES THIS ZX SPECTRUM-SOUNDING ELECTRONIC FUNK MASTERPIECE, AND THE ANONMS EMCEE'S VOCALS ARE ORIGINAL AND SKILLFUL. MEANWHILE "THE GLOBE" AND "WARNING" GET PROGRESSIVELY JAZZIER AS YOU WORK YOUR WAY THROUGH THE RECORD. GOOD STUFF **** (DJ YODA) |
